The Major League Baseball Players Trust will hold its annual Players Trust Golf Tournament at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., for the third successive year Jan. 3-5, 2008.
The picturesque course on the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean is the home of the PGA Tour’s Buick Open and takes on added significance in 2008 because it will play host to the U.S. Open in June. Torrey Pines gives players and their guests an opportunity to test themselves on one of the country’s most demanding courses.
The Players trust Golf Tournament typically brings out the best of the best in baseball. Barry Bonds, Ken Griffey Jr., Jimmy Rollins, Eric Chavez, Mark Teixeira, Frank Robinson and Dave Winfield have been among the stars to come out in the tournament's early years.
The players join with sponsors and guests for a weekend that highlights the Players Trust and brings new donations to the players’ collective charity. Beyond the money raised by the tournament, a live auction following the first evening’s dinner fetches additional funds for the Trust.
In 2007, Barry Bonds and Kenny Lofton took over as auctioneers at one point and cajoled bigger bids out of their ball-playing colleagues.
The sponsors of the ’08 tournament will again be The Upper Deck Co. and Take2 Interactive, which have helped bring the tournament and associated charitable activities to new levels of success.
Thanks to all who have made this event a huge success for the Players Trust.
